Shenyang is the political, economic, and cultural center of Northeast China. Known as Mukden in Manchu, it served as the capital from 1625 to 1644. The Shenyang Imperial Palace is the most complete surviving royal complex in China after the Forbidden City, featuring distinct Manchurian architectural styles. The Fuling and Zhaoling Tombs are masterpieces of early Qing mausoleums. The Zhang Xueliang Residence (Marshal's Mansion) documents the turbulent Republican era.
