Wenchang is famous for the Wenchang Space Launch Site, China's first coastal space launch center open to the public. It is also a renowned hometown of overseas Chinese, with a strong Nanyang (Southeast Asian) influence.
Key experiences include: the Wenchang Space Science Popularization Center, where China's space program and rocket models are on display; Dongjiao Coconut Grove, a vast green ocean of hundreds of thousands of coconut trees with fresh coconut water; the Song Family Ancestral House, offering insights into the Soong family (including Soong Ching-ling) and modern Chinese history; and Wenchang Chicken, the most famous of Hainan's Four Famous Dishes.
It's about a 1-hour drive from Haikou Meilan International Airport. Quieter than Sanya, the area is well-suited for a relaxed getaway.
