Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, founded in 1906 by the Yale-China Association, is a Class-A Grade-3 general hospital under the direct supervision of China's National Health Commission. With a century-old reputation, it stands as one of Hunan's most prestigious comprehensive medical institutions, particularly renowned for complex and critical care.
The hospital's International Medical Department (XIMC), established in July 2015 in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), was the first international medical department in a large public hospital in Hunan Province and passed international accreditation in 2016. XIMC provides full-English consultation, multilingual escort services, direct billing with global mainstream commercial insurance providers, and cross-border telemedicine. International patients are exempt from upfront payments when using partner insurers. In 2025, international patient visits reached 1,761—a sixfold increase from 2024.
XIMC operates on a fully appointment-based model. After booking one week ahead, patients may request a specific specialist. For all admitted patients, a dedicated "medical butler" accompanies them through examinations, surgery, payment, and meal ordering. Life facilities in the wards are equipped to international standards.
